Executive summary

Complete supply and installation of MBBR sewage treatment plants for both the Saudi and Bahraini sides of the causeway, meeting each country’s discharge standards with stable biological treatment under varying loads and automated PLC control with odour management.

The King Fahad Causeway is a 25 km sea-bridge between Al-Khobar and Al Jasra, managed by KFCA. FK & Partner Co. handled supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the MBBR plant treating domestic wastewater from staff and administrative facilities on both sides; IE-Consult led the design.

The challenge

A single plant had to serve facilities on both sides of an international border and satisfy two countries’ discharge standards, with stable performance under fluctuating hydraulic and organic loads.

Site & process constraints
  • Two countries’ discharge standards
  • Fluctuating hydraulic & organic loads
  • Border-facility reliability
Engineering approach

A treatment train sequenced to the contaminants.

Grit & Grease Pre-treatment → MBBR Biological Reactor → Sand Filtration → Chemical Disinfection

Grit & grease pre-treatment protects the process; an MBBR biofilm reactor gives high-efficiency BOD/COD/TSS reduction resilient to load swings; sand filters and chemical disinfection finish for safe discharge; an odour unit and PLC auto-control complete the plant (2 × 500 m³/day).

MBBR for load resilience: biofilm process holds performance under variable causeway loads.
